Raniban Forest
Raniban Forest, whose name means Queen's Forest, stands on the forested Nagarjun hillside at the north-western edge of the Kathmandu Valley. It is a quiet, densely wooded area close to the city, yet it feels far removed from it once the tree cover closes in. In local legend, Raniban is one of Nepal's most haunted places: stories told in Kathmandu speak of a large old tree in the forest and of voices and footsteps heard there after dark. Those accounts are folklore, not verified fact, and they are the reason the forest appears in lists of haunted places in Nepal. Visitors should treat it as a forest walk in daylight and stay on established paths.
