Thamel is Kathmandu's main tourist district, a dense maze of narrow streets packed with hotels, restaurants, trekking shops and bookshops. Since the 1970s it has been the starting point for most travellers heading to the Himalaya. By day it is a busy shopping quarter, full of gear shops and handicrafts; by night its bars and live-music venues come alive.
