Top 10 Best Thakali Restaurants in Kathmandu

Kathmandu's Thakali kitchens bring the food of Mustang's Thak Khola valley to the capital: buckwheat dhindo, black lentil dal, aromatic timur chutney, and ghee-infused rice served on a steel thali. This guide ranks the ten best Thakali restaurants in Kathmandu, from the Tangal flagship that has served more than 2 million thalis to the late-night kitchen by the airport.

What Makes a Thakali Thali

The Thakali people are an ethnic group native to the Thak Khola valley of Mustang District, and their cooking travelled down the old salt-trading routes to Kathmandu. A classic Thakali thali is a set meal on a steel plate: steamed rice, black lentil dal, seasonal vegetables, gundruk (fermented leafy greens), timur chutney, pickles, and a meat dish of your choice, usually chicken, mutton, fish or buff. Buckwheat dhindo, the stiff porridge of Mustang, is the traditional alternative to rice, and it is worth ordering at least once. The flavours are warming rather than fiery: jimbu, the Himalayan herb, and timur, the tingling Sichuan pepper, do most of the work.

How We Chose These Ten

We ranked these ten on consistency, faithfulness to Thakali cooking, and reputation across the city's food guides, and we checked every name against Hamro Nepal's entity directory before listing it so that no restaurant appears twice. Locations, phone numbers and signature dishes were checked against the restaurants' own websites where they exist, including the official website of Jimbu Thakali and the official website of Thakali Bhanchha Ghar, and against Nepal Traveller's 2023 guide to Thakali restaurants, Travel Nepal Guides' 2026 list and TravelMeMore's 2024 list. Prices and opening hours are stated only where a restaurant publishes them itself; everything else is left out rather than guessed.

1. Jimbu Thakali - Tangal, Jhamsikhel, New Baneshwor & Kalimati

Jimbu Thakali is the benchmark, and it tops this list because it is the most complete Thakali operation in the Valley. It is named after jimbu, the Himalayan herb that gives Thakali cooking its distinctive flavour, and its founder, Vivek Sherchan, comes from Thak-Khola village in Mustang. According to the restaurant's official website, it has served more than 2 million thalis. The Tangal flagship is joined by branches in Jhamsikhel, New Baneshwor and Kalimati.

Order the signature Cheli Jwai Thali, and pay attention to the dal: the jimbu tempering is what separates this kitchen from the rest. According to the restaurant's official website, its Nepal branches are open Sunday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. The Tangal branch can be reached on 01-4537674.

2. Local Thakali - Gairidhara, Naxal

Local Thakali in Gairidhara, Naxal, is the neighbourhood favourite, and one of the most reviewed Thakali restaurants in Kathmandu. It keeps the focus on the classics: a chicken thali, fish khana, a vegetable thali and mutton sukuti, served in the generous portions Thakali khana is known for.

Come hungry, and expect a queue at peak meal times. The chicken thali is the safe first order; the mutton sukuti is the one regulars come back for.

3. Thakali Bhanchha Ghar - Chaksibari Marg, Thamel

Thakali Bhanchha Ghar is the Thamel classic. Its official website, btbg.com.np, presents it as a home of Himalayan and Nepali cuisine, and it sits on Chaksibari Marg, a short walk from Thamel's main streets. It is also the one Thakali name in Hamro Nepal's Top 15 Best Restaurants in Kathmandu, where it appears at number 13.

The dining room is calmer than most Thamel restaurants, which makes it a good choice for a first Thakali meal. It can be reached on +977 1-4701910.

4. Mantra Thakali - Jhamsikhel & Maharajgunj

Mantra Thakali in Jhamsikhel, with a second branch in Maharajgunj, is the pick for meat lovers. Its mutton momo and Mustang aloo are the dishes regulars recommend, alongside a full Thakali thali.

The room is straightforward and family-friendly rather than a fine-dining setting, and it draws a steady local crowd. If you eat mutton, this is the kitchen to judge the city's Thakali cooking by.

5. Lete Thakali Kitchen - Tangal & Jawalakhel

Lete Thakali Kitchen sits in Tangal, opposite the Chatta Ganesh Temple, with a second branch in Jawalakhel. It is a family-run kitchen that keeps its menu close to the Thakali originals, and it can be reached on +977 1-4516866.

Mutton sekuwa and chhoila are the dishes to ask for, with the full Thakali thali as the centrepiece. The room is simple and the cooking is the draw.

6. Daura Thakali - Nayabazar, Gairidhara, Pulchowk & Pepsicola

Daura Thakali, run by the Bota Group, has branches in Nayabazar, Gairidhara, Pulchowk and Pepsicola, so there is almost always one within reach. It is known for its cultural evenings, when staff in traditional daura suruwal serve the Thakali thali with live music and dance.

The food stays close to the Mustang originals, and the rooms are built for groups and family gatherings. Book ahead if you are coming with a large party or for an evening performance.

7. Mustang Thakali Kitchen - Thamel Marg, Thamel

Mustang Thakali Kitchen on Thamel Marg describes itself as a modern Nepali restaurant serving traditional Nepali food, and it is rated 4.5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor. Its Thakali thali and momo make it a handy first stop for visitors staying in Thamel.

It is the convenience pick on this list: a proper Thakali meal without leaving the tourist district, and a good fallback when the better-known Thamel kitchens have a wait.

8. Nilgiri Thakali Delights - Tangal & Thamel

Nilgiri Thakali Delights is a family-owned restaurant with locations in Tangal and in Thamel, on Tridevi Marg above Himalayan Java. Its Thakali thali is the main draw, with fresh trout and grilled dishes among the favourites. It can be reached on +977 1-5900595.

It is a homely, unpretentious room, and a good choice for a first Thakali meal in central Kathmandu. The trout is worth ordering if it is on the menu when you visit.

9. T3 Thakali - Tribhuvan International Airport & Maharajgunj

T3 Thakali sits opposite the Golden Gate at Tribhuvan International Airport, with a second branch in Maharajgunj, and it is the late-night Thakali option in Kathmandu. Its yak sukuti, chyangra sukuti and kanchemba are the dishes to order, alongside the full Thakali thali.

It is the practical choice for a Thakali meal before an early flight or after a late arrival, when most of the city's kitchens have closed.

10. Thak Khola Thakali Cuisine - Dhobighat, Jhamsikhel & New Baneshwor

Thak Khola Thakali Cuisine takes its name from the Thak Khola valley of Mustang, the homeland of Thakali cooking. Its Jhamsikhel dining room in Dhobighat, with a second branch in New Baneshwor, is known for its fish Thakali set, a rarer find among Kathmandu's Thakali kitchens.

The restaurant has two seating areas that suit both families and larger groups. If you have eaten your way through the chicken and mutton thalis on this list, the fish set is the plate that makes this kitchen worth the trip.

Practical Advice for Eating Thakali in Kathmandu

Order the thali, not a single curry: the set is the point of Thakali cooking, and the refills of dal and rice are part of the deal. Try dhindo at least once, and ask for timur chutney on the side if you are unsure about the heat. The popular kitchens fill up at lunch and dinner, so arrive early or be ready to wait. Two more Thakali tables worth knowing, Bagaan Thakali Kitchen near Keshar Mahal and Cafe de Tukche in Lazimpat and Boudha, did not make the ranked ten this time. Prices and hours change often, so confirm them with the restaurant before you go; this guide states them only where the restaurant publishes them itself.
