Top 10 BIT Colleges in Kathmandu

Searching for the best BIT colleges in Kathmandu? This guide ranks the ten colleges that actually offer a Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT) degree in the Kathmandu Valley, grouped by who awards the degree, so you can compare like with like before you apply.

What Is BIT, and Why the Awarding University Matters

BIT, the Bachelor in Information Technology, is a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate degree. But BIT is not one standard degree in Nepal. Tribhuvan University, Purbanchal University and foreign universities such as Lincoln University College each award a degree called BIT, with different syllabuses, credit hours, entrance rules and recognition. That is the single most important thing to check before choosing a college: ask who awards the degree, not just whether the letters BIT appear on a brochure.

Tribhuvan University's BIT is run by its Institute of Science and Technology and is open to students who have completed +2 in any stream. Admission is through Tribhuvan University's own BIT entrance examination. In the Kathmandu Valley, Tribhuvan University offers BIT at only four constituent campuses: Patan Multiple Campus, Amrit Campus, Padma Kanya Multiple Campus and Bhaktapur Multiple Campus. No private college in the Valley offers Tribhuvan University's BIT. Purbanchal University's BIT is a four-year, eight-semester degree offered by affiliated private colleges, and Lincoln University College's BIT is a four-year, 120-credit degree offered by its affiliated colleges in Kathmandu. This ranking covers all three routes, in that order, and it deliberately leaves out colleges whose IT degree is called something else, such as BSc Computer Science, BSc Information Technology or BSc CSIT, even when those colleges are well known for IT.

1. Patan Multiple Campus

Patan Multiple Campus, at Patan Dhoka in Lalitpur, is a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University and the first choice for BIT in the Valley. Its own website states that it started the BIT programme in 2076 BS, and Tribhuvan University's BIT campus list places it among the university's BIT campuses. As a public constituent campus, it admits BIT students through Tribhuvan University's BIT entrance examination, and it is the natural first stop for any student who wants Tribhuvan University's own BIT degree at public-campus cost. Its location in Patan also makes it the most convenient Tribhuvan University BIT option for students living in Lalitpur.

2. Amrit Campus

Amrit Campus, also known as ASCOL, is a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University at Lainchaur in Kathmandu. Tribhuvan University's Institute of Science and Technology lists Amrit Campus among the campuses admitting students to BSc CSIT and BIT, and the campus publishes its own BIT admission notices. Amrit Campus is one of the Valley's best-known science campuses, so its BIT students study alongside a large science community, and its central Lainchaur location is easy to reach from most parts of Kathmandu. Like Patan, it admits BIT students through Tribhuvan University's BIT entrance examination.

3. Padma Kanya Multiple Campus

Padma Kanya Multiple Campus, at Bagbazar in Kathmandu, is a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University and the first women's campus of Nepal, established in 1951. Tribhuvan University's BIT campus list includes Padma Kanya among the campuses offering BIT, so it is the Valley's only women's campus offering Tribhuvan University's BIT degree. Its Bagbazar location, in the centre of Kathmandu, and its long history as a public campus make it a strong choice for women students who want a Tribhuvan University BIT degree. Admission is through Tribhuvan University's BIT entrance examination.

4. Bhaktapur Multiple Campus

Bhaktapur Multiple Campus, at Doodhpati in Bhaktapur, is a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University and the fourth Tribhuvan University BIT campus in the Valley. Its own website lists BIT among its programmes, and Tribhuvan University's BIT campus list includes it. For students living in Bhaktapur, it is the only Tribhuvan University BIT campus in their own city, which removes the daily commute to Kathmandu or Lalitpur. Admission is through Tribhuvan University's BIT entrance examination, as at the other Tribhuvan University campuses.

5. Texas College of Management & IT

Texas College of Management & IT, at Siphal in Chabahil, Kathmandu, offers the BIT degree of Lincoln University College, Malaysia. Its official programme page describes a four-year, eight-semester, 120-credit BIT, accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, recognised as equivalent by Tribhuvan University and approved by Nepal's Ministry of Education. The degree is open to +2 graduates of any discipline, with a minimum of 50 percent, and the college runs fall and spring intakes. Its final year includes a project and industrial training, which suits students who want a foreign-affiliated BIT with structured practical work. Texas College is a sister unit of the Texas International Education Network.

6. NCMT College

NCMT College, the National College of Management and Technical Science, at Samakhusi in Kathmandu, is affiliated with Lincoln University College, Malaysia, and lists BIT among the degrees it offers. It is the second Lincoln-affiliated BIT option in this ranking, and it gives students in the Samakhusi and Balaju area a foreign-affiliated BIT without travelling to Chabahil or the city centre. Because it awards the same Lincoln University College BIT as Texas College, compare the two colleges on teaching, facilities, class size and fees rather than on the degree itself, and confirm the current intake directly with the college.

7. KIST College

KIST College, at Kamalpokhari in Kathmandu, offers Purbanchal University's BIT degree. The college was established in 1995, and its official website lists BIT among its programmes, with admissions open for the current academic year. KIST is one of the longest-established private colleges in this ranking, and its central Kamalpokhari location is easy to reach. Purbanchal University's BIT is a four-year, eight-semester degree, and KIST is a solid choice for students who want a Purbanchal BIT from a college with a long operating history.

8. Kathmandu Don Bosco College

Kathmandu Don Bosco College, at Lazimpat in Kathmandu, offers Purbanchal University's BIT degree. Its official programme page describes a four-year, eight-semester BIT, and the college runs morning classes, which suits students who work or have other commitments in the afternoon. Its Lazimpat location is close to the centre of Kathmandu. Students considering Don Bosco should confirm the current class timing and intake with the college, since morning programmes fill early.

9. Kantipur City College

Kantipur City College, at Putalisadak in Kathmandu, offers Purbanchal University's BIT degree. Its official programme page describes a four-year, eight-semester BIT of 141 credit hours, and the college says the degree prepares students for software development, networking, database and system administration roles. Putalisadak is one of Kathmandu's main education hubs, so the college is easy to reach by public transport from most parts of the city.

10. Asian College of Management and Technology

Asian College of Management and Technology, at Min Bhawan in Kathmandu, is a Purbanchal University-affiliated college that offers BIT. It rounds out this ranking as the tenth BIT option in the Valley, giving students in the Min Bhawan and New Baneshwor area a nearby Purbanchal BIT college. As with every private college in this guide, confirm the current BIT intake, fee and class schedule directly with the college before applying, and check that the degree on offer is Purbanchal University's BIT.

How to Choose the Right BIT College in Kathmandu

Start with the awarding university. Tribhuvan University's BIT, Purbanchal University's BIT and Lincoln University College's BIT are different degrees, so decide which one you want before comparing colleges. If you want Tribhuvan University's BIT, your choice is one of the four constituent campuses in this guide, and you must sit Tribhuvan University's BIT entrance examination. If you want a foreign-affiliated BIT, Texas College and NCMT College award the Lincoln University College degree, so compare them on teaching and cost. If you want a Purbanchal BIT, KIST College, Kathmandu Don Bosco College, Kantipur City College and Asian College of Management and Technology are the options in this guide.

Next, check the practical details that decide whether a college works for you: the campus location and your daily commute, morning or day classes, class size, computer labs, and whether the college runs the final-year project and industrial training that employers ask about. Do not judge a college by the letters BIT alone, and do not assume that a college offering BSc CSIT, BCA or a foreign BSc in IT also offers BIT. Visit the campus, read the awarding university's own programme page, and ask the college to show you the degree certificate the programme leads to.
